Even after all these years, Alan is still probably my favourite writer on the subject of comics. I don’t always agree with him, and I don’t always share his tastes (though our visual aesthetic seems pretty closely aligned), but his way of putting words together to express his view always, always works for me. I’ve no time for writers who mince words, or hide subjective opinions behind academic posturing; Alan never does either of these things.
If he thinks something’s shit, he’ll say so, and in as many words. He’s often said it about things I’ve liked in the past, but always in such a way as to make me understand where he’s coming from, and agree that, while for me it might be a stone cold classic- for him, it’s shit.
