My Stuff
In recent months quite a few new people seem to have stumbled across me either here or on twitter. Seems like a good time to do one of those “who I am and where I am” type posts like Warren Ellis does from time to time.
So, my name is David Wynne, and while I make my living working as a hospital porter on the night shift, the thing I want you all to know about me is that I am a cartoonist. Here’s a list of my stuff (or at least the highlights), in handy clickable link form:
Damnation was the first comic I made in public, a sci-fi/crime graphic novel, that you can read in it’s entirety absolutely free at that link. If you like it, you can buy a copy of the book (which has lots of extra stuff in it, including an extra 17 page story) here. Naturally, since it was my first proper work, the art is somewhat inconsistent; but I still think it’s the best writing I’ve ever done.
Mindhack is the unfinished sequel to Damnation. For a long time I had plans to finish it- and I still might one day- but it’s so long ago now that it would feel like going backwards. Still it might be worth reading for curiosity value. Move quick though- I’ve decided not to renew the domain this year, so it’ll be disappearing any day now. It starts pretty strong, I think, and I think I wrote some good dialogue, but I was having a very chaotic year, and the story kind of fell apart into a meandering mess a couple of chapters in. I tried out some interesting things with the art though, so it may be worth a look.
Particle Fiction was a monthly comic I produced from April 2010 to may 2011. Most issues were 16 pages long, although it occasionally ran longer. This is the project where I think I finally found my “voice”, which was kind of the point of it. It’s an anthology of sorts, with lots of different (complete) stories in different genres and styles. Amongst them Hypergirl, although that issue is no longer available at that link, for reasons that will become clear in a minute. I’m sad to say that like Mindhack, it ends with an unfinished story; unlike Mindhack I definitely WILL finish this one. When I get time. And as I said, there are lots of COMPLETE stories there too, so don’t let it put you off.
Hypergirl was originally an issue of Particle Fiction, a super hero story co created with Ian Sharman. It came out so well that we decided to do a one-off print version through Orang Utan Comics. And then AAM Markosia asked us to turn it into a graphic novel, for publication in the autumn of this year. And then the digital version won the Comixology award for favourite debut of 2011 (voted for by the public, tied with Luther Strode). Needless to say, Hypergirl is now rather dominating my time.
So there you go. There’s a few other bits and bobs out there if you go hunting, but that’s the meat of it. And you’ll be pleased to know that my new year’s resolution is “no more unfinished projects!”
Enjoy!
