Since Posterous is going belly up, I’ve had to build Particle Fiction a new home here on Tumblr! It’s not perfect, but I think I’ve got it working pretty well now.

You can follow it if you want, but as it’s basically an archive of stuff I did a couple of years ago, and I’m unlikely to post much new stuff to it, I wouldn’t bother. The main thing is, if you’ve not read my Particle Fiction comics before, you should go there now and READ THEM ALL!

LUNCH BREAK SKETCHES - CAPTAIN MARVEL WEEK!

I work the night shift 4 nights a week. Every night I draw a small sketch on my lunch break, which usually happens around 4am GMT (although I often don’t get a lunch break, in which case I do it when I get home around 7am).

I’ve now reached a place in my sketchbook where it’s really difficult to take a decent photo with my phone, which makes posting them as soon as they’re done a real pain- so here’s last week’s lunch break sketches all at once.

As you can see, I decided to make it CAPTAIN MARVEL WEEK! This was a suggestion from @filbypott after I posted Monday’s sketch. I really enjoyed having a theme to work from, not least because it saved me having to solicit and then trawl through suggestions every night on the way to work. I think I might do a theme every week from now on!

Tonight’s sketch is Captain Marvel- as in, the title character from the current Marvel series.

I chose this subject myself because, well, none of the suggestions I got today really appealed to me, and I’ve been meaning to add to the mehoosive amount of Captain Marvel fan art on tumblr for quite a while, because I think it’s a good book, and because I LOOOOOVVVVE the costume.

Tomorrow I promise to use a real suggestion, no matter what I get…!

LUNCH BREAK SKETCHES: A QUICK RUN DOWN OF WHAT THESE ACTUALLY ARE, AND WHAT MAKES A GOOD SUGGESTION

So. As you probably already know, for the last few weeks I have been doing a sketch on my lunch break each night at work, and posting them here. Rather than just draw a never ending string of pictures of Batman, Judge Dredd and Ideasman, I’ve been taking suggestions for what to draw from my twitter followers.

It’s a fun exercise; I get half an hour to draw the best picture I can of a semi-random character pick, with no prep time available. I’m really enjoying doing it.

That said, there seems to be a bit of confusion as to what constitutes a workable suggestion, so I thought I’d write a quick thing here that I can link to, rather than keep having to explain it:

THE OPERATIVE WORDS ARE “LUNCH BREAK”. I have half an hour to do the drawing. So if your suggestion involves more than one character, I’m not going to pick it. If your suggestion includes the words “and” or “versus” or “riding on” or “wearing a” or similar, I’m not going to pick it. If your suggestion requires lots of photo reference, I am DEFINITELY not going to pick it. Basically if your suggestion is more than one word or name, you probably need to rethink it.

If you want something big and complicated, I do take commissions, but these are meant to be quick and fun.

So, here’s the rule: pick one character or person, OR pick one theme or activity. Anything more than that? Sorry, but I’m not going to be able to do that justice.

I don’t mean to sound like a grumpy bastard, but that’s what I am, so that’s how it comes out.

Tonight’s sketch is Omar Little from The Wire, suggested by Nicolas Papaconstantinou (@nixsight on twitter).

The Wire is tied with The Batman Animated Series for my all time favourite TV series, and Omar is easily my favourite character in the show, so of course I wanted to do this.

Nick is one of the hosts of my favourite podcast, the MOMBcast. Check it out at MOMBcomics.com- you won’t be disappointed. He also runs the fantastic fast fiction website elephantwords.co.uk, which I also strongly suggest you investigate. He’s also a friend and very good company at comic conventions, and I’m trying very hard not to make a joke about his height.

LUNCH BREAK SKETCH - HALO JONES FOR @NicWilko

Tonight’s sketch is Halo Jones, suggested by our first repeat contributor, Nic Wilkinson (@NicWiko on twitter, who also suggested Martha Washington back in the first week of these).

Many of you will have guessed that this picture is something of a response to the scandal that broke yesterday surrounding the news that the Bristol Comics Expo were offering a limited edition print for sale of Halo in the nude and chained to a tree, illustrated by original series artist Ian Gibson. Halo’s reaction, as depicted here, pretty much mirrors my own. The print has been withdrawn from sale now, thankfully, after the intervention of 2000AD’s owners, Rebellion, who own the copyright on the character.

I wonder how Alan Moore feels about the integrity of one of his celebrated creations actually being protected by the corporate entity he created it for. It’s an odd turn of events, to say the least.

Here’s a thing: sometimes, as an artist, you decide to do something on a whim (in this case draw your favourite character from one of your favourite series of novels), and because you’re doing it within a set of arbitrarily defined rules that you committed to as part of an ongoing project (in this case: no prep, whole thing to be completed within half an hour, no scrapping part way through to do over) it doesn’t come out anywhere near the technical standards you normally hold yourself to— but that’s okay, because it’s part of the exercise that sometimes you’ll do a picture you aren’t proud of. The exercise isn’t about the result, it’s about the process.

So anyway, then you put the piece up online, because that’s part of the exercise too, and you stop thinking about it.

And then the creator of the character sees the picture, and is very complimentary, and you get a bit embarrassed, but it’s cool. You want to explain to them why it’s not a very good drawing, and that your other stuff is better, it REALLY IS HONEST… but It’s cool, you accept the compliment, roll with the embarrassment and move forward trying not to think about it.

You don’t stop thinking about it. It bugs you all night. “Why didn’t I try harder? Does she even dress like that in the books? Would she wear a t-shirt like that? I bet she wouldn’t. T-shirts like that don’t even exist outside of comics. And WHAT THE FUCK IS UP WITH HER RIGHT ARM?”

And then you get up the next morning to see this post, and you want to turn yourself inside out with embarrassment.

…wait, this isn’t as universal an experience as I thought it was when I started typing is, it?

Anyway, point is: I need to go pull Shooting At Midnight off my shelf and find a decent description of Bridie so I can do a proper drawing of her.

I can’t let this be the only drawing of her in existence. She deserves better.
